Anaerobic methane oxidation and denitrification as methane sink

چکیده

Early social exposure is important for developing appropriate, species-specific adult behaviors. Carson Murray et al. (pp. 18189–18194) followed wild chimpanzees, habituated to human observers, in Gombe National Park, Tanzania, and analyzed maternal subgrouping patterns to investigate why adult males tend to be more gregarious than adult females. Mothers accompanied by their sons were more gregarious than mothers accompanied by their daughters. Mothers with male infants spent more time with others and associated with larger party sizes, containing both more maternal kin and more nonkin, than mothers with daughters. Mothers with young sons associated more frequently with adult males compared with mothers with young daughters during the first six months of infancy. Mothers with male infants spent approximately 10% more time with individuals beyond their immediate female family members than did mothers with female infants. The differences in social behavior between mothers with young sons and mothers with young daughters may provide sons with observational learning experiences and male role models early in life that foreshadow sex differences in adult chimpanzee social behavior, according to the authors. — L.G. Enzymes involved in the anaerobic oxidation of n-alkanes: from methane to long-chain paraffins

Anaerobic microorganisms play key roles in the biogeochemical cycling of methane and non-methane alkanes. To date, there appear to be at least three proposed mechanisms of anaerobic methane oxidation (AOM). The first pathway is mediated by consortia of archaeal anaerobic methane oxidizers and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) via "reverse methanogenesis" and is catalyzed by a homolog of methyl-co...

Anaerobic oxidation of methane in sediments of Lake Constance, an oligotrophic freshwater lake.

Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) with sulfate as terminal electron acceptor has been reported for various environments, including freshwater habitats, and also, nitrate and nitrite were recently shown to act as electron acceptors for methane oxidation in eutrophic freshwater habitats. Radiotracer experiments with sediment material of Lake Constance, an oligotrophic freshwater lake, were per...

Anaerobic oxidation of methane: an “active” microbial process

The anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is an important sink of methane that plays a significant role in global warming. AOM was first found to be coupled with sulfate reduction and mediated by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). ANME, often forming consortia with SRB, are phylogenetically related to methanogenic archaea. ANME-1 is even able to produce ...

9. Significance of Anaerobic Methane Oxidation in Methane-rich Sediments Overlying the Blake Ridge Gas Hydrates

A unique set of geochemical pore-water data, characterizing the sulfate reduction and uppermost methanogenic zones, has been collected at the Blake Ridge (offshore southeastern North America) from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 cores and piston cores. The δ13C values of dissolved CO2 (ΣCO2) are as 13C-depleted as –37.7‰ PDB (Site 995) at the sulfate-methane interface, reflecting a substan...
